First impressions

Please vote on my potential teacher bags! I need something sturdy that can carry a whole lot of heavy textbooks. I should probably be going for something more professional but until I find a rolly-bag I can stomach or a sweet vintage leather satchel I can afford, trust me when I say these are a step up from what I am currently using. (I also use it for the beach if that tells you anything.)

I have to admit, I've had my eye on the ostrich one for quite a while now. I'm not sure why but I feel we have a strong affinity for one another (though he may not know it yet).

Next week my students will be writing their own short stories. To prep them for this I'm giving them various assignments that focus on different aspects of short stories. For one journal topic, for instance, I'm going to give them a first sentence and then have them write the rest of the first paragraph of a story.

Here are a couple great first sentences that I found online.

“Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.”

"All this happened, more or less." -Slaughterhouse Five

“I planned my death carefully; unlike my life, which meandered along from one thing to another, despite my
feeble attempts to control it.”

"The telephone rang, and she knew she was going to die."

"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect." - The Metamorphosis

“I write this sitting in the kitchen sink” - I Capture the Castle

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." - 1984

"If I could tell you one thing about my life it would be this: when I was seven years old the mailman ran over my head."

"We are each the love of someone’s life."

"A pickle may not remember getting pickled, but that doesn’t make it a cucumber."

"It was bitter cold, the air electric with all that had not happened yet."

"All children, except one, grow up." - Peter Pan

Do you have one you like? Feel free to make one up and I might use it!

Both of the bags with writing on them scream "teacher" in an annoying way. Definitely go for the ostrich. Or go to a thrift store and get a sweet vintage one. That's definitely preferable.

As for short stories, check this out: http://boringoldraphael.tumblr.com/post/1009239424/short-stories

I vote ostrich! :D

I like:
"The seller of lightning rods arrived just ahead of the storm"...from Ray Bradbury's 'Something Wicked This Way Comes.'
